There was a time, not long ago, when Americans actually ruled the world in motorcycle racing. Riders like Kenny Roberts Sr. and Eddie Lawson rose from the dirt-track ranks to the international stage and raced elbow-to-elbow, teeth clenched, like their lives depended on each finish. From 1978 to 1993, Americans won all but three world titles in the premier class, renamed MotoGP in 2002.
